Earlier I mentioned My search for the perfect purse...
I finally found it! Well, actually I'm not sure if it's the perfect one yet, really, but it arrived 10 minutes ago and looks good so far! (And smells good, too. Leather. Sorry, PETA.)
Thar she is! I think it's the first non-black purse I have ever owned. And while it's metallic ("bronze"), it's not gaudy/shiny.
But speaking of gaudy (in the best possible way), the inside is lined with paisley -- which I always love, being the SF/Berkeley-bred girl that I am. (The print is lime green, pink and bright sky blue, no less.)
The only request I'd have for the fine people at B. Makowsky, who made this Avalon Pebble Leather E/W Satchel, is that it would be nice if the main compartment was split in two. Then again, maybe I will grow to appreciate its single-ness.

This is what used to be glued to my turntable. Her name is Rio, yes, and she dances on the sand.
I'll have you know that I was the biggest Duran Duran fan EVER. (Or so I thought at the time.) At one point, I had all four walls in my room AND the entire ceiling covered with Duran pics. I also ran a couple Duranie fanzines... all a precursor to becoming a music-lovin' writer as a grown-up. ;-)
You must have been a fashion victim at least once in your life. What hideous blunder did you commit?

I'm in the green, but I think my sister's pants are worse than mine. My shirt didn't have a zipper on it at the top - it was a fake zipper, just screened on the shirt. Classy! I also love how everything's wonky here: My sister's shirt tuck, my glasses - even the painting on the wall behind us. (And what is with us both holding two fingers? I don't remember being posed to that nth degree...)
Tacky stripes rule. Hey - it was the seventies. Need I say more?!
How do you pass the time during a flight? What do you bring in your carry-on?
In a word: iPod. In a few words: 30gb iPod video.
Music is what I mostly use it for, but I also have about 500 photos, movies, some TV shows and a couple games as well. The only downside is the need to recharge it frequently if you're using the backlight (such as for a movie or anytime you're moving around the menus).
I bought a plug to charge it when I'm minus a computer with USB port, and discovered when I was traveling in France and England that you can use the bathroom's "shaver only" outlet (which is just like an American 110v outlet) to charge the thing. I knew it was pretty low voltage for a shaver, but risked my whole 'pod in the hopes that I wouldn't blow it out. Fortunately, it worked just swimmingly, and amped me up for the flights home. :-)
But why, oh why, does my pretty black iPod come with white headphones?
Finding the ideal handbag has been way way more of a hassle than I expected.
My old generic leather bag was getting old and I wanted something new. I found a purse I loved: this little Furla (but in black).
Well, I loved it 'til I went to Ikea and, in the midst of loading my cart with furniture all by myself, didn't zip up the top of this shallow purse... and lost my wallet. Grrrr.
Lessons learned: Need to be more careful of wallet. (First time ever lost one.) Need to always close purse. Need deeper purse with a more passive closure to save me from my own idiocy/laziness.
Been looking (mainly online: amazon.com, endless.com, ebags.com, bluefly.com) and trying different bags (in real life at nordstrom and macy's) and haven't found anything I'm happy with yet.
But I have come up with a list of some musts and must-nots:
Must have...
- a magnetic top closure (flap good but not required)
- an outside pocket (for my keys)
- an inside pocket
- leather construction or high-quality nylon
- short strap - and ideally one strap vs two
Must not be...
- excessively shiny, cheap-looking or totally boring
- shapeless, lumpy - but not too boxy
- too shallow
- too small
- fake leather - nor should
it have fur
- have gold/brass hardware (i want silver, ideally)
- priced much over $200, ideally (less is fine)
I kind of like the leather patchwork bag (see right), and the reviewers at Macy's rave... but I'm not totally sold yet.
Suggestions welcome!
